What’s this?  Surely fast diet and cake can’t be uttered in the same breath?  Is it really being suggested that successful weight loss can be achieved on a diet of cake??

Well, if current research can be believed then the answer is a very firm YES…   But, surely the idea of cakes and diets going together flies in the face of everything you’ve been told up to now?  Well, the answer to that is also a YES…

Let me explain…

In a previous post it was asked whether counting calories was the basis of a successful fast diet… The post promoted the idea of eating a healthy diet of non-processed foods to lose weight and to keep the weight off in the longer term…

So now you have to abandon that and start stuffing yourself with cake????  Well, no, not really but there is a valid point to be made from the ‘eat cake to lose weight’ argument…

A researcher has claimed that he lost 27lbs in 10 weeks by sticking to a diet of convenience store foods…  Instead of regular meals he ate every 3 hours.  And what he ate sounds appalling but, this is it – 1 Twinkie cake (deep fried) which is a mini sponge cake with cream filling.  Added to this he ate Doritos, Kellog’s Pops cereal and Oreo biscuits.  Along with this he drank one double shot of espresso every day.  The final part of the diet was a daily multivitamin pill, a protein shake and a helping of vegetables such as a tin of green beans.  His daily calorie intake was kept to within 1800.

What he was trying to prove, and seemed to do so by his 10 week weight loss of nearly 2 stones, was that you could fast diet successfully just by limiting calories and the calorie reduction was more important than the kind and quality of the food you ate.  Certainly the additional vitamins and proteins that were added to the daily diet showed that the basic foods chosen were of very low nutritional quality.

I guess to prove his point he had to do something pretty extreme and 10 weeks of throwing sugary, saturated fat laden junk down your throat it exactly that.  By doing this the researcher has indicated the viability of a low calorie fast diet.

So, point proved – reducing calorie intake encourages weight loss…  But, is it advisable to lose weight this way?  Absolutely not…  If you want to lose weight then don’t be extreme.  You need to establish eating patterns that you can sustain over time so that you can fast diet successfully but keep the weight off over a long time.   So healthy foods and not cakes is the way to go as a weight loss regime and also an anti cellulite treatment…
