How many times have you heard someone say that they’ve gained weight and their fast diet isn’t working because they have a slow metabolism…
‘I can’t lose weight however little food I eat because I’ve got a naturally slow metabolic rate,’ they wail… No fast diet success there then?
There’s a lot of misleading stuff written about your metabolism and its part in your fast diet success – or lack of success…
We’re told that we need to increase our metabolic rate in order to lose weight. We’re told to eat certain foods at certain times of the day to boost our metabolism. We’re also told that fluctuating weight (yo-yo dieting) damages our metabolism and decreases the body’s ability and speed in burning calories…
Well, the good news is that recent research has shown that all the above aren’t true. Another truth is that there isn’t any magic to boosting your body’s metabolic rate.
The rate at which our bodies use energy depends on a number of factors, over many of which we have little or no control.
Unfortunately girls, men have naturally a faster metabolism than us… Unfair but true!
Our age is factor and again, unfortunately our metabolism slows down as we grow older… Unfair again… But, I don’t know about you, I’d much rather get old with a slower metabolism than not get old at all!
The size of your body and its composition also impacts on your metabolism! Our chubbier friends who often complain about having a slow metabolism are actually living in la la land… Their bodies use more energy just keeping them going.
The bodies that use more energy, burning more calories than others, are those with greater muscle mass. If you want a faster metabolism you have to have a leaner body with more muscle on board.
And the way you get this energy, calorie burning body? By exercising. By getting fit. By getting your heart working harder and more efficiently. By using weight bearing and cardiovascular exercises to use up fat stores and build muscle. And the great thing about muscle is that even after you’ve finished exercising your muscles keep on working. What a result, eh?
So increase your metabolic rate and your fast diet gets the boost it needs… And you’ll look great…
