It’s a fact that most women want a successful fast diet… It’s also a fact that most women don’t get enough sleep. Is there a link?

Well, it appears that current research shows that there definitely is a link! Lack of sleep can make you fat… Wow… So does it follow that if you get more sleep you’ll lose weight? It seems so…

It also seems that you’ll look younger and be more healthy too…

Let me explain…

Well over half of adults in the western, industrialised world are overweight. Many of these people are women and many of them aren’t only overweight but are obese. Carrying all this weight makes you look older and is also very unhealthy and is likely to shorten your life…

Research has investigated the amount of sleep people get, their metabolic rate and their weight. It appears that those who get significantly less than 7 hours sleep a night often become obese. Lack of sleep doubles your risk of becoming obese.

People who sleep for less than 4 hours a night are 73 per cent more likely to become overweight. Restricted sleep can lead to food cravings for up to 900 extra calories a day. This much extra food can lead to an alarming weight gain of up to 2lb each week! That’s horrifying…

The research suggested that although those who were studied had no significant weight problems beforehand, their weight grew as they slept for less time each night.

It seems that lack of sleep stimulates the hormones that regulate a person’s appetite and leads to higher levels of ghrelin, a hormone that triggers appetite, and lower levels of leptin, the hormone that tells your body it’s full and doesn’t need to be fed any more.

The problem seems to be likely to get worse as over the past 50 years, the average night’s sleep has dropped from nine to seven hours.

A new survey shows that just 19 per cent of adults enjoy a full eight hours a night, while 16 per cent are getting by on fewer than six.

Over half of us are regularly so weary at work that we long to go home, while 59 per cent of women in their 30s report that they are nearly always tired.

Evidence supports the idea that restricted sleep leads hormones not operating properly and the research team investigating other factors in the connection between lack of sleep and individuals gaining weight.

If you don’t sleep enough, then you’re awake longer (obviously!) so you have more time to over eat. Added to this, if you’re overweight then you’re more likely to suffer from poor sleep patterns with additional problems of snoring, sleep apnoea which are likely to interrupt your night’s sleep.

An informal US experiment involved a group of women being asked not to alter their eating and exercise habits but to sleep for seven-and-a-half hours every night.

Although it seems quite amazing, all the women lost between 3lb and 15lb. As a result of these findings further tests are investigating the impact of sleeping for longer on body weight.

Researchers are trying to look for ways of changing the obesity epidemic and it appears that lack of sleep and increasing weight are true throughout the industrialised world.

So, getting enough sleep can be an important part of your fast diet regime. And it’s effective too. And FREE….

Once you’ve got your sleep sorted out and start losing weight you can start to conquer your cellulite problems. Get up to date anti cellulite treatment advice and see the back of your lumpy bumpy skin…

What’s this? Surely fast diet and cake can’t be uttered in the same breath? Is it really being suggested that successful weight loss can be achieved on a diet of cake??

Well, if current research can be believed then the answer is a very firm YES… But, surely the idea of cakes and diets going together flies in the face of everything you’ve been told up to now? Well, the answer to that is also a YES…

Let me explain…

In a previous post it was asked whether counting calories was the basis of a successful fast diet… The post promoted the idea of eating a healthy diet of non-processed foods to lose weight and to keep the weight off in the longer term…

So now you have to abandon that and start stuffing yourself with cake???? Well, no, not really but there is a valid point to be made from the ‘eat cake to lose weight’ argument…

A researcher has claimed that he lost 27lbs in 10 weeks by sticking to a diet of convenience store foods… Instead of regular meals he ate every 3 hours. And what he ate sounds appalling but, this is it – 1 Twinkie cake (deep fried) which is a mini sponge cake with cream filling. Added to this he ate Doritos, Kellog’s Pops cereal and Oreo biscuits. Along with this he drank one double shot of espresso every day. The final part of the diet was a daily multivitamin pill, a protein shake and a helping of vegetables such as a tin of green beans. His daily calorie intake was kept to within 1800.

What he was trying to prove, and seemed to do so by his 10 week weight loss of nearly 2 stones, was that you could fast diet successfully just by limiting calories and the calorie reduction was more important than the kind and quality of the food you ate. Certainly the additional vitamins and proteins that were added to the daily diet showed that the basic foods chosen were of very low nutritional quality.

I guess to prove his point he had to do something pretty extreme and 10 weeks of throwing sugary, saturated fat laden junk down your throat it exactly that. By doing this the researcher has indicated the viability of a low calorie fast diet.

So, point proved – reducing calorie intake encourages weight loss… But, is it advisable to lose weight this way? Absolutely not… If you want to lose weight then don’t be extreme. You need to establish eating patterns that you can sustain over time so that you can fast diet successfully but keep the weight off over a long time. So healthy foods and not cakes is the way to go as a weight loss regime and also an anti cellulite treatment…

Is that right? For our fast diet to succeed and we cut down on calories will we lose weight?? Well, you may do for while but your efforts will soon come to a shuddering halt!

Have you noticed that you cut down on your food intake and your fast diet takes off… Wow! This is great you think…

But then it all seems to go wrong… The weight loss stops, or certainly slows down a great deal… How many people say, ‘I can’t diet. I’ve tried them all but diets don’t work for me… I’m just made to be fat…’.

Are these people right in what they say? Well, yes and no – but mainly no…

Unfortunately much of the advice given that you’re led to believe will help your fast diet success is completely wrong.

Cut calories, you’re told… So you do…

Make starchy carbs the centre of your diet plan… Ok, I’ll do that, you think…

Buy low fat products and avoid fatty foods like meat and dairy products like the plague… Yes, I can manage that one too…

So, off you go with your shopping list to buy all these foods that you’ve been told will have you resembling a thin person in no time at all…

But then it doesn’t work, you’re hungry, disillusioned and in the end you’re thinking, ‘Sod it, I can’t do it, I’m destined to be fat…’

So, what’s wrong with the advice? Loads, that’s what… Let’s look at it…

You’ve cut your calories and what happens? Your body responds as you want it to at first and you see some weight loss. But then your body slows right down because you’ve instructed it to go into starvation mode.

This leads to the second piece of advice – make carbs the centre of your diet… No, you shouldn’t. If you’re going to cut down on calories it’s the carbs that you should cut down on and this will drive your body into fat burning mode which is what you want it to do to see your fast diet work well… What should be eaten then? Real food that’s not processed – meat, fish, eggs, vegetables and salads… Simple but very good, nutritious food…

Then we get onto the advice about eating (or not eating) fat. Have you noticed that low fat foods are heavy on the sugar? So most of them are going to encourage you to gain weight not lose it!

Did you think that fat in food is bad? Yes, as do most people, but it’s wrong… Real fat isn’t bad. It makes you feel full and is also vital for your body – you need fat for vitamins that are essential for your health. In a 4 ounce pork chop there’s only 2.3 grams of unsaturated fat and 1.5 grams of saturated fat.

It’s the man made fats that are in processed foods that are bad for you… That’s the fat you should be avoiding like the plague… Awful stuff!

So, your fast diet weight loss isn’t just about cutting down calories…

How many times have you heard someone say that they’ve gained weight and their fast diet isn’t working because they have a slow metabolism…

‘I can’t lose weight however little food I eat because I’ve got a naturally slow metabolic rate,’ they wail… No fast diet success there then?

There’s a lot of misleading stuff written about your metabolism and its part in your fast diet success – or lack of success…

We’re told that we need to increase our metabolic rate in order to lose weight. We’re told to eat certain foods at certain times of the day to boost our metabolism. We’re also told that fluctuating weight (yo-yo dieting) damages our metabolism and decreases the body’s ability and speed in burning calories…

Well, the good news is that recent research has shown that all the above aren’t true. Another truth is that there isn’t any magic to boosting your body’s metabolic rate.

The rate at which our bodies use energy depends on a number of factors, over many of which we have little or no control.

Unfortunately girls, men have naturally a faster metabolism than us… Unfair but true!

Our age is factor and again, unfortunately our metabolism slows down as we grow older… Unfair again… But, I don’t know about you, I’d much rather get old with a slower metabolism than not get old at all!

The size of your body and its composition also impacts on your metabolism! Our chubbier friends who often complain about having a slow metabolism are actually living in la la land… Their bodies use more energy just keeping them going.

The bodies that use more energy, burning more calories than others, are those with greater muscle mass. If you want a faster metabolism you have to have a leaner body with more muscle on board.

And the way you get this energy, calorie burning body? By exercising. By getting fit. By getting your heart working harder and more efficiently. By using weight bearing and cardiovascular exercises to use up fat stores and build muscle. And the great thing about muscle is that even after you’ve finished exercising your muscles keep on working. What a result, eh?

So increase your metabolic rate and your fast diet gets the boost it needs… And you’ll look great…

Do you want up to date advice and information on getting rid of your lumpy cellulite bum?

There’s loads of information about the nitty gritty of what to eat when you’re trying to lose weight on a fast diet. We know that we should also shift ourselves around more and exercise as well as watching what we eat…

Some very recent, up to date research has shown that a very simple tip when you’re out shopping for groceries can help in fighting the flab and also save you money… Hard to believe? Well, I’ve tried it and got friends to try it also and this tip really has an impact on what you buy…

So, what is this way of losing weight and also saving quite a lot of money into the bargain? It’s really important because these days we’re all trying to cut back because of rising prices… Some of us are in danger of losing our jobs due to the cut backs and the financial climate… We’re also trying to pay off debts that we’ve built up during the good times…

There’s no doubt about it, times are hard… Every little bit of saving can help and if it also helps us lose weight, feel better and make us healthier then all the better.

One of the things that is very difficult when we are on our fast diet is to avoid buying those foods in the supermarket that we know are bad for us. They’re full of fat or full of sugar, or even worse, full of both… Some of these purchases are simply habit. We like our comfort foods – nibbles while we watch TV or if we’re feeling a bit fed up…

The supermarket people are very clever. They know exactly how shoppers’ minds work. They know how to present their goods so that we’re tempted and can’t resist adding those things that we shouldn’t be eating into our purchases.

So, what is this way of keeping up with your fast diet and also keeping hold of more of your money?

Well, the research has shown that if you leave your credit cards at home and only take cash when you shop then you not only spend less but you’re also a great deal more careful about what you buy. In fact, those paying cash for their groceries buy far less sugary and fatty foods… The research checked the shopping habits of 1000 men and women over a period of 6 months. Methods of payment were checked. Cash was used as often as credit cards.

The shopping paid for with credit cards tended to be full of far less healthy foods – biscuits, ice cream, crisps/chips. The cash purchasers bought a higher proportion of healthy foods.

Why does this happen? Well, the researchers say that parting with cash leaves a far greater impression on the shopper than handing over a card. The card transaction is more abstract, less real. So, it follows that if the cash transaction is more painful and real then the shopping is done with more care and thought. With cash your impulsive buying urging is more controlled.

So, you can keep your fast diet weight loss going and lose weight at the same time. Ditch your credit cards…
